Kerala is located in the apex region of the triangular Indian peninsula jutting out southward into the Indian Ocean, from the mainland of south Asia. The apex runs far out into the Indian Ocean and is surrounded on three sides by the waters of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The Indian peninsula tapers down almost to a fine point, its southern extremity being Cape Comorin (now Kanya Kumari cape), which was part of old Kerala, till 1956. This southernmost point is in the very center of the tropical region.

Kerala state is located on the western side of the triangular Indian peninsula, with its southern boundary at a few kilometers from the tip of the land, Cape Comorin. Kerala experiences extremes of weather due to nearness to the Equator and prevalence of tropical climate.
